Lisa's Turning 29! (Wow, that's old...) - 2008, 9/20 : Our beloved friend, Lisa, officially turned a little more "worse for wear" on the 28th of September. The gang met up at a cool little lounge called "Martuni's" where we discovered that they have a pretty sweet selection of...oddly enough...Martinis. Afterwards, the gang made a short trek down to Destino where Lisa discovered the new love of her life...they say pictures speak a thousand words, so I guess I'll stop typing here.

Visiting RJ! - 2008, 7/28 : Yup, you guessed it, these are the first paparazzi pictures of Robert James, otherwise known as RJ. This was our first time seeing Beth after she left for maternity leave and the family looked great. The little guy was sound asleep during our visit...aside from the little farts and gurgles that were coming from his nether regions. It's clear from the initial pictures that Linda was very concerned about RJ as Debbie was holding him, which is understandable. =) It was good catching up...and to finally see the infamous RJ.

Kyle's Graduation Party! 2008, 6/21 : On a fateful day in the summer of 2008 (THE day of infamous lightning storms that started the massive California fires), mother nature, friends and family gathered in San Jose to celebrate Kyle Taketa's graduation from chiropractic school and send him off to make lots of money. (School loans are a bitch) =) Theresa organized a fantastic luau complete with hula bear cookies, hula shot glasses, hula skirts, hula lessons and even "Sexy Hula Kyle". For my part, I was just praying that my camera would not break from the intense whiteness of those hairy legs. Congratulations "Doctor" Kyle Taketa...I'll make an appointment one of these days.

Point Reyes Camping Trip - Memorial Day Weekend - 2008, 5/25 : The last day of our camping trip is spent with a trip to the Oyster Farms! We pig out and part ways as half of the group heads back down to LA. Tammy, Armando, Alejandra, John, Mich and I spend the rest of the day relaxing. We play fetch (with the dog, of course), some friendly horse shoe competition and burn the rest of the firewood...all in all, a great camping trip! Thanks to everyone for pitching in and making it a fun trip for everyone.

Chef Genji, the Ninja in a White Suit - 2008, 1/14 : Beth, Debbie, Enit, Linda (Team NEC Marketing/PR) joins forces with Steve and John (Team Law Offices of Macpherson Kwok Chen & Heid LLP) to take yours truly out for a FREE lunch at Genji's in San Jose! Aside from the free lunch, I was given my own custom T-shirt designed by Creative B'stro, Beth, Steve and John...though John's spell-checking input came in at the 11th hour when the shirt was already printed and ironed-on...a minor quibble. =) This will be my new workout shirt...guys and girls will tremble before me as I walk through the gym with this extra tight fitting garment. Debbie was awesome and got me the gift I had been drooling over since last fall, which was the BIG DADDY lighter! This lighter is probably the biggest Zippo lighter in the world...it's about 9 inches tall and about 5 inches wide...and can easily fit in your pant leg...no, not your pocket...but your pant leg. I can't wait to buy some lighter fluid and start lugging this thing around offering lights to the ladies...My game just went up 10-fold with Big Daddy!

Virgil's Very First OC-1!! - 2008, 1/5 : My very first roadtrip of 2008 is the one to Oakhurst, California. Some 40+ miles from Yosemite, Oakhurst is the home of Tiger Canoe and is our destination on this cold and rainy Saturday. Just the day before, one of the biggest storms to hit California in recent memory passed through and wreaked havoc in the Bay Area. Not the best prelude for a trip to pick up your BRAND NEW OC-1! =) Surprisingly, the trip went smooth. Tiger was the coolest guy...very down to earth and a talented craftsman/artisan. Virgil didn't know how the canoe would come out looking because he hadn't seen any pictures of the canoe...he'd only traded emails and phone calls with Tiger on how he wanted the design of the canoe to look. When we got there and Tiger flipped on the lights...there it sat...it was so damn pretty! The lines, coloring, and the fading paint scheme...all made it look like the canoe was moving even while it sat on the stands! We spent at least an hour chatting with Tiger about the canoe, his business, how the canoes are made...and how an OC-1 workshop ended up in the middle of the woods, nowhere near the ocean! Tiger also showed us some custom stand-up paddling boards he was developing for a client and explained how the development process is still old-school: He builds one, they beat it to hell, he builds another, they beat it to hell again. This process occurs over and over again with Tiger making refinements to each successive model. One of the most interesting points that I came to learn was the process by which Tiger "colors" his canoes. You might think that he paints them by airbrush or some other method AFTER the canoe comes out of the mold. You'd be wrong. He actually colors the inside of the mold BEFORE he lays down the carbon fiber/resin! So the colors and design scheme have to be decided upon early in the process and without benefit of seeing the finished and fully constructed lines of the canoe. It also means that the design is "baked" into the canoe as it's being constructed. Amazing! The trip was awesome if only to see Virgil's canoe all shiny and brand new. But meeting Tiger and learning, in more detail, the entire process of building these high performance watercraft gave me a renewed appreciation for the boats that we paddle. Now made with space-age materials that are lightweight and stronger than any traditional wood canoe, there's no replacement for the time-tested knowledge, skill and artistry that go into the construction of OC's. They've been made by hand for thousands of years and that's still the case. The painstaking attention to detail, the eye for colors/design, the knowledge of the materials and the process...Tiger is a true artisan.

3rd Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest! - 2007, 10/30 : The gang reconvenes for the 3rd annual pumpkin carving contest! This year, we got some really cool designs going. Cristina was a newbie to the event but came out of it with a pretty cool looking...cow?! A very original design coming from Tammy and Armando went on to win the coveted "Flying Skull" award! Congrats to Tammy and Armando! Another highlight was the unknown B-Movie we watched on the Sci Fi Channel...some movie about a HOT egyptian mummy princess that would get "jiggy" with dudes to steal their mojo and make her the all-powerful something-or-other. So sad that such a bad movie would be burned into my memory for this particular halloween... =)

Thanh and Anny Visit the Bay Area on Superbowl Weekend - 1/13, 2007 : Thanh and Anny drive up from San Diego to visit me for my birthday and to watch the Superbowl.
